Exploring Native American Experience in Surgical Practice

Presenters: Amy Waer, MD, Diane Poskus, MA, Carlos Gonzales, MD, Vanessa Jensen, MD, & Nazhone Yazzie, MD

Description

The presenters will share their findings of research that explored the following questions:

  • How Native American cultural beliefs impact the duties and performance of a surgical resident
  • Some of the obstacles or conflicts presented by surgical practice in particular, and
  • How awareness and understanding of  cultural beliefs and the challenges they present contribute to the creation of a more conducive learning environment for Native Americans in a surgical residency program.

Discussion will engage the audience in exploring the implications of these findings for understanding how cultural identification and practices may affect and how educators may support learners in undergraduate and graduate medical student education.
