Communication Skills

Communication skills are essential for effective teaching, as much as they are for practicing medicine. Residents and other clinical faculty serve as role models for medical students. How you engage patients becomes a lesson for our students. It's important to be mindful of the various components of the patient interview as a communication process, not simply as a fact-gathering process.

Below is a playlist of short videos describing approaches to patient-centered communication to keep in mind when you're not only practicing medicine, but teaching medical students. There are additional resources for modeling patient engagement on the Communication Skills menu (left).
