Communication skills are essential for effective teaching, as much as they are for practicing medicine. Residents and other clinical faculty serve as role models for medical students. How you engage patients becomes a lesson for our students. It's important to be mindful of the various components of the patient interview as a communication process, not simply as a fact-gathering process.
